The grand procession of gifts began. Each tribute carried forward by court attendants, announced with reverence before the Emperor.
The Imperial Princess stood at the head of the line reserved for the princesses. She held the white jade scepter with both hands. Its surface was cool beneath her touch. She had practiced this moment a hundred times. Her steps measured, her bow precise, her hands steady as she offered the tribute.
As she approached the Dragon Throne, she caught a glimpse of the Emperor’s neutral, unreadable expression. Did he see her? Did he notice the thought behind her choice? Or was she just another faceless daughter among the ranks?
She lowered herself into the deepest bow, her forehead nearly touching the silk carpet. “A humble offering for the Son of Heaven,” she said, her voice even, unwavering. “May your reign be as eternal as jade.”
A pause. Then, the Emperor gestured, and a eunuch stepped forward to receive the gift.
No words of approval. No lingering glance.
The Imperial Princess rose slowly, hiding the flicker of disappointment in her chest.
As she stepped back into her place among the other princesses, she knew that she had fulfilled her role flawlessly. Whether it earned her a moment of her father’s attention or not… that was beyond her control.
The court was an intricate game, and she had played her part. Perhaps, one day, it would be enough.
