Improvised music is always an adventure, a discovery. Thomas Scandura being the drummer of the Molecules I have know for years and have played hundreds of concerts with. I had never met Jason Hoopes before, knew nothing about his playing. I watched a bit of some videos of him playing with Fred Frith.

This is the email that I send to Tom and Jason a few weeks before flying out to San Francisco for the concert.

Hi Guys

A few things that I have been thinking for our gig on the 27th.

For about the last year or so I have been listening mostly to
various forms of metal. All of it on the “out there” side of metal. Lots of dgent, death metal, dark metal, grindcore, ect. I have pretty
much developed an obsession with it.

In edition to the all usual things that avant-improv guitars do;
clicks, clanks, scrapes, I thought I would put myself and hopefully
the audience out of the “comfort zone” and try to incorporate a “metal” kind of sound or vibe to my playing for the 27th.

Big sustained power chords. big drones. I love to solo over drones going from a melodic idea to total distance.  I will be playing with a lot more distortion. I will be bring my Schecter guitar instead of my Strat or Les Paul.  And a lot of effect pedals.

Nothing specific really, it’s still all free improv. I would just like to slant it in a more powerful “metal” direction which you can interpret as you like. Maybe if we are lucky we will avoid the usually improv clichés, possibly find something new.  

I really looking forward to playing with both of you.
