In *The Retired Colourman*, Sherlock Holmes is asked to investigate the troubling disappearance of a businessman’s wife and her suspected lover after the pair vanish under suspicious circumstances. The client, a jealous and abrasive paint dealer named Amberley, claims they have run off with his money, but Holmes quickly senses deeper contradictions in the man’s story. As Watson gathers clues and Holmes pieces together the psychological undercurrents, the case turns toward a chilling revelation hidden behind locked doors, deceit, and a carefully constructed façade.

This 1943 broadcast from the New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes stars Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson, the iconic duo who defined the characters for a generation of radio listeners. The series at this time was sponsored by Petri Wine, whose lighthearted commercials with Harry Bartell provided a warm contrast to the darker mysteries Holmes unraveled each week.
