Sixteen months after a near-fatal car accident, Ben Hogan mustered enough strength to compete at Merion Golf Club. Needing a par at the 72nd hole to force a playoff with Lloyd Mangrum and George Fazio, Hogan hit his famous 1-iron approach to 40 feet and two-putted for par.
