Rika, a sheet metal manufacturer is a shining example of how clever planning, innovative technologies, and warehouse optimization can dramatically improve a company's processes. See how Rika processes 12,000 tons of sheet metal per year and how their production is carried out around the clock. Spread across the entire production facility, Rika relies on nine automated guided vehicles, the Jungheinrich EKS 215a for buffer storage of their raw materials and end products.

Jungheinrich also co-designed their pallet racks with 2,500 spaces and their custom automation software

So-called transfer stations are located in the production area. You find them on the floor, on the shelves, or on trolleys. While the driverless transport system delivers the goods the last leg of transportation to the machines is done manually. This interaction between man and machine has proven to be particularly efficient.

Laser receipt detection at the transfer points, and manual scanning trigger the transport order for the automated guided vehicle system. The goods are picked up by the closest free vehicle and brought to the storage location provided by the system.

The Jungheinrich logistic interface takes over the management of the buffer racks and reports the storage locations back to the customer's ERP system.

A number of challenges had to be overcome when implementing the Jungheinrich AGVs. Narrow transport paths, varying pallet heights, weighing individual pallets, and a racking height of over 16 feet proved to be a special challenge for this project. Jungheinrich had answers to all of them. The vehicles are equipped with special sensors for height and weight control. The self-supporting forklifts allow storage at 17 feet. The vehicles are equipped with lithium-ion technology and are charged automatically at one of the three automatic charging stations. This happens during operation without any intervention by the employees.

Innovative I/O modules used at Rika also provided a cost efficiency as there was less need for electrical installation work.

The automated guided vehicle system at Rika carries and delivers 1,000 pallets a day. At peak time this is 80 trips an hour.

In addition to the enormous relief for employees, the Jungheinrich system was able to significantly increase efficiency including a reduction in incorrect storage. This warehouse is a result of intensive cooperation between Rika and Jungheinrich. Jungheinrich relies on close customer relationships to develop custom solutions that meet each business's unique requirements. In this way, Jungheinrich makes a significant contribution to Rika’s success.
