The salmon snailfish (Careproctus rastrinus) is a species of bathydemersal fish native to Japan. The salmon snailfish grows to 51 cm with a uniform pink body, a silver eye and a long tapering dorsal and analfin nearly connecting to the small tail. Salmon snailfish live in the North Pacific rabgibg from 70 to 3,300 feet in depth. It feeds on invertebrates and fish eggs and uses its modified whisker like pectoral fins which are covered in taste buds to feel around for food on the seafloor. Careproctus rastrinus is part of a species complex and it is said that Careproctus rastrinus is restricted to populations in the western pacific and is known conclusively only in the Sea of Okhotsk. These individuals are the only specimens outside of Japan. A single salmon snailfish named “OG” was brought from japan to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and was later found to be gravid. The eggs were hand raised by the aquarist Alicia Bitondo which are the specimens in this tank. Initially OG refused to eat but Alicia discovered that by tickling the pectoral fins with food it signals to them to eat.
