In Parco Naturale Fanes-Sennes-Braies lies the legendary parliament of marmots, "il parlamento delle marmotte". The karst rocky slopes next to Rifugio Lavarella look like a amphitheater or parliament - and the Ladin saga told by Karl Felix Wolff tells its tale about the Fanes kingdom and its alliance with marmots.
While living in harmony with nature is maybe too much to ask, but visiting Alpe di Fanes shall at least remind every visitor to respect nature - again quite unrealistic being such a famous destination, typically quite crowded, and even hard to get a table for lunch in either of the otherwise nice locations to rest: Rifugi Fanes e Lavarella, Ücia Pices Fanes, Ücia dles Muntagnoles.
Guess what, hikers from all over the world do not carry their luggage from rifugio to rifugio. They get it delivered by car, quad, or whatever to have the most convenient experience in the Dolomites ...
However, the multi-day hikes through this area are very recommendable as it is a beautiful Dolomite area. It is also a wide area with enough space for both hikers and MTB cyclists.

Next time we will probably move on to hike the complete Alpe di Fanes including Gran Fanes from Pederù, San Vigilio, to Capanna Alpina, San Cassiano - taking the bus back through Val Badia.

Please, only go to the mountains well equipped - especially to the Dolomites. And, please, respect no fly zones - Parco Naturale Fanes-Sennes-Braies is like all natural and national parks in Italy such a no fly zone (the road from San Vigilio to Pederù is just outside of the parc).
