The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) is now in Phase 2 of rollout. If you are a non-EU short-stay traveler entering the Schengen Area, you are more likely to face facial image and fingerprint checks already, ahead of the full rollout on April 10, 2026.

Border delays are already showing up at major hubs. Lisbon Airport reported queues up to 7 hours in January 2026 during scaling, and first-time biometric enrollment can add 2 to 3 minutes per person.

EES also enforces the 90/180 rule automatically and can flag overstays on exit. There is no EES traveler fee. ETIAS is separate. The Travel to Europe app can pre-register some details within 72 hours, but you still complete the in-person border check. As of January 2026, full support is confirmed for Sweden, including Stockholm Arlanda Airport, with other countries rolling out gradually.
