The government are set to cut 10,000 troops from the Armed forces as Britain pivots to modern forms of combat in drones, robots and cyber warfare. The UK’s Defence Review is expected to see some tanks and aircraft scrapped whilst ministers invest in more ships, submarines and sailors.

Under the plans, the army would be reduced to just 70,000 soldiers accelerating trends in recent decades where consecutive governments have cut the numbers of serving troops. However, some generals have warned slashing the armed forces would put the UK at more risk from our adversaries such as Russia and China. There are also concerns our allies in the United States will be worried by the cuts.

The government argue it is vital to divert spending to modern arenas of combat, for example in space and cyber. Ministers will also ramp up Britain’s nuclear arsenal and invest in new equipment for existing soldiers.
