Today, it is common to use Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) or Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) to control and supervise the pumping stations from a centralized control room with SCADA (Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition) Systems.
The control rooms monitor pump faults, sewage levels and other alarms and parameters which help in making the city sewage system efficient. Sewer gas is a complex mixture of toxic, odourous and corrosive gases produced in sewage systems by the decomposition of organic wastes present in sewage water. Sewer gases include Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S), Ammonia (NH3), Methane (CH4), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) and Nitrogen Oxides (NOx).
Sewer gases are of concern due to their odour and health effects on people working at Sewage Pumping Stations / Treatment Plants and residing in its vicinity. Further, molecular contamination of air inside control rooms of Sewage Pumping Stations / Treatment Plants can corrode and damage the electronic devices installed in them, leading to hazards like sewage overow and loss of control on pumps and other systems.
