I am here to speak about IVF injections. We all think about injections whenever it comes to IVF. If it is trying naturally or going through an intrauterine insemination injections are not a must. However if one has to go through an IVF procedure injections are a must. Usually women will have to take injections for 10 to 12 days when they go through the IVF procedure. These injections are the FSH and LH injections and the antagonist injections or the agonist injections to prevent ovulation from happening and this will also help us time the egg retrieval and then the final injection which is meant for aiding in the maturation of the eggs inside the follicles is the hCG injection which we usually call as a trigger shot. The FSH and LH injections or the stimulation injections are usually started from the second or third day of the menstrual cycle and most of these injections are injections that can be self-administered subcutaneously with thin needles just underneath the skin. They're similar to the injections people use for diabetes that is the insulin injections. These injections can be administered at home and we usually encourage women to self-administer the injections as this will reduce the stress associated with traveling to the hospital daily for the pricks. We would advise women to involve their partners during the injection process as this will make them psychologically much more relaxed and it'll also make the lady feel that her partner is there with her in this journey. While injecting it's advisable to clean the injection site and one can also use an ice pack to numb the area before injection. After the injections sometimes especially when the antagonist injection is taken some women experience minor itching or redness at the injection site which goes off within 10 to 15 minutes. That is not a cause of concern however it's advisable to change the injection sites even if it is in the same place that is in the anterior abdominal wall that is just below the belly button or in the thigh just to make sure that you don't prick the same side over and over. This will reduce the bruiseness that can happen with daily injections. Sometimes the skin at the injection site can become a little sore but that's also a very normal thing. The next thing is after about four to five days of the IVF injections there is a possibility that with increase in the level of the estrogen hormone there could be increased vaginal secretion. In such cases it is advisable to change the undergarments frequently and not to wipe off the secretions and make the area sore. We advise women not to use panty liners as that would increase the risk of infection. After about seven or eight days of the injection lot of women experience breast tenderness. This is similar to the soreness of the breast that happens just before the onset of menstrual cycle. This is also a very very normal and a common thing that happens during the stimulation or IVF injection phase. After about seven or eight days lot of women complain of bloating of the lower abdomen especially when there are multiple follicles growing. Very rarely women complain of irritability, moods wings, hot flashes and some of them also complain of altered sleep pattern. However I would attribute this to anxiety rather than the side effects of the IVF injections. But on the whole the IVF injections are quite safe and there are no major side effects of taking the injections. The most important thing that is required to be done during the IVF injections is one should hydrate herself quite well with at least three to four liters of water. This would help in reducing most of the minor side effects that happen with the IVF injections. It's important to take deep breaths every now and then to improve the oxygenation to all the tissues of the body including the ovaries this also helped really anxiety. On the whole IVF injections are quite safe and there are no major side effects with the IVF injections and one should not worry while taking the injections for IVF.
