Here’s HOW this causes the damage. The lenses of your eyes act as a magnifying glass, and just like you can use a magnifying glass and sunlight to burn paper, the lens would focus the sunlight onto the back of your eye, or the area called the retina, causing “Solar retinopathy”, or a permanent central blur.

If you plan to use binoculars, you MUST put the filter in FRONT of the binoculars - otherwise it could burn a hole in your glasses or eye.

How to make a brown paper bag viewer: Cut a small hole in the paper bag, just big enough for the glasses to see through, and glue your glasses to the inside of the hole. You can keep the earpieces on, to hold it on their head, or trim off the ear pieces, and the bag sits directly on their head. Put the bag over your children’s head as soon as they go outside, or the eclipse even starts.
