Waku Waku 7 (わくわく7) is a fighting game developed by Sunsoft and initially released as an arcade game for the MVS / Neo Geo system on November 21, 1996. Waku Waku 7 has an irregular feature set for a fighting game of its time, and includes features common to SNK fighting games (four basic attacks, screens zooming, etc.). The game is not a sequel; it is instead named after its seven main characters. Each has a significantly different playstyle and parodies a well-known character from another game. Each character has a powerful special move (Harahara) that's easy to execute, need an often lenghty charge up, is unblockable and difficult to dodge, but could be interrupted while charging. The game has a roster of nine characters (two of which were available only in the Versus mode of the console ports):
- Rai is a delinquent school boy who ditches school for long rides on his bicycle. Donning his goggles, scarf, and jacket, he dreams of one day becoming a great hero. He is in the hunt for the Waku Waku balls for the thrill and his only wish is to continue to his journey.
- Arina is a normal student who likes to hang out with her friends. Hoping to find herself a "wonderful boyfriend", she joins the search for the Waku Waku balls. In her ending, the fairy of the balls pairs her up with Rai, something that Arina particularly despises.
- Maruru is the non-threatening guardian of Lost Forest who can easily understand the human tongue. When he found Mugi, she took a liking to him. He hopes to return the girl to her parents and protects her from the people who try to steal his Waku Waku ball. In his ending, Mugi is reunited with her family and they adopt him (he poses as a dog).
- Made from the garage of Waku Waku city's police headquarters, this anthropomorphic 1713 pound mecha is on its longest test run. Chojuro wants to use it and grant his wish from the Waku Waku balls.
- Dandy J is an experienced treasure hunter who constantly goes on adventures with his trusted partner. Once his partner goes missing, he takes Natsumi under his wing. He was hired to discover the secret of the Waku Waku balls. In his ending, his contractors turn against him and Dandy J fights back.
- Teese is one of seven dolls created by Dr. Ronbllozo. She acts as one of his servants and usually cooks him meals or keeps the house clean. One day, he collapsed and his condition showed no indication of improvement. Hearing of the Waku Waku balls, she leaves her home for the first time to wish him well.
- Slash is a mysterious demon who is the black sheep of his kind: he hunts demons and likes humans. Hoping to one day be accepted by either world, he decides to track cursed entities that plague both his home and the surface realm. In his ending, he tells the fairy his wish and she responds by summoning a hoard of Fernandezes.
- as well as two boss characters: Bonus Kun (Slash is a mysterious demon who is the black sheep of his kind: he hunts demons and likes humans. Hoping to one day be accepted by either world, he decides to track cursed entities that plague both his home and the surface realm. In his ending, he tells the fairy his wish and she responds by summoning a hoard of Fernandezes. ) and Fernandez (The Great Emperor of The Demon World, Fernandeath - a goofy yet very maniacal harbinger of chaos. It frequently says "desu", a pun of Japanese grammar and the word "death".)
The plot: "It is said that the person who collects all sevens of the legendary WakuWaku balls will have their dearest wish granted. Those who find one of the balls become obsessed with the ruthless desire to obtain the others, who will be victorious in the bitter battle to become the owner of all the balls. Victory or defeat - it all lies in your hand." Once all seven Waku Waku balls are gathered at the Waku Waku monument, the fairy of the balls awaken. Unfortunately, the act also let loose the danger that the fairy was trying to conceal: Fernandez. Magically grown to skyscraper heights, players have to defeat it before they can say their wish.
