Last year, teachers at Tzu-Chi Alternative Learning Centres (ALCs) took charge for the first time in planning the annual Sports Day, overseeing both the event details and games. With more experience under their belts this year, the two ALCs expanded participation from upper primary students to the entire student body, resulting in unexpectedly positive outcomes.
Cheers and victorious shouts echoed throughout the halls as students competed fiercely in various games. The two Tzu-Chi Alternative Learning Centres in the Klang Valley held their respective annual Sports Day events, for students of all ages.

First, I took a balloon,
and with my partner,
we held it up like this,
and then we ran all the way to the end
and passed it to our other (teammates).
Teachers from both centres spearheaded the planning, with support from community volunteers to execute a series of fun and engaging competitions. Parents were also invited to join in the event.

Just one week (before),
every day she asked me,
‘Daddy, are you coming?’
I said, ‘Yes, yes, I’m coming.’
(Teacher) from the school also called me,
‘Are you coming?’
I said, ‘Yes, I’m coming.’
She was so happy to be coming.

The Sports Day events are designed
to encourage parent-child interaction,
creating moments that touch the heart
and inspire action.
Sport is widely recognised as a powerful tool for fostering unity. Most students are refugees from Myanmar, and the gaps between them, rooted in ethnic tensions, gradually faded during the event.

Naturally, they had miscommunication that time in school,
and then they ended up arguing.
Because there’s some clusters, like the Myanmar cluster,
they don’t join the Rohingya cluster.
But today, in this sports day,
we purposely combined them,
eventually, just to win, we saw the teamwork.
Group competitions helped students realise that true strength lies in teamwork, mutual support and mutual love, enabling them to achieve their goals and go further together.
