Garmin vs Race Chrono vs Professional Timing

Do you need to buy a Racelogic or VBOX for professional and accurate race timing for your track days??

I commonly have people ask should they get a racebox/vbox/garmin catalyst or some other professional racing timing gear.
i say meh!!! I think VBOX and Racebox and Garmin Catalyst is unnecessary.

Case in point with actual data and proof.
Professional Race Timing pegged me at 1.05.508 dead.
Garmin Catalyst pegged me at 1.05.52 dead
Race Chrono pegged me at 1.05.50 dead.

Garmin Catalyst cost me $1600 AUD. Racebox will cost $400 AUD .. Racelogic VBOX cost I dont know. Race Chrono cost $30 AUD on app store. Everyone has a phone with a GPS reciever. An external Garmin Glo 2 Reciever cost $140 AUD if you want to improve your GPS accuracy but unnecessary. And a bloody good Phone mount eg Rams Phone mount at $99

So for $120 AUD you can have a proper GPS and Video recorder ALL in one.. no need for go pros etc.. and the cool thing... it has data over lays you can over lay on your video!!

The Garmin is an expensive and to be honest useless item that in hindsight I wouldnt recommend. Hit a ripple strip hard the unit detaches and video feed blanks out... annoying as FK. You can a


i actually prefer the Racechrono footage as its more stable and has cool over lays that I cannot do with the Garmin. The racebox you have to manually overlay data with an App and Go Pro footage or some other camera you use and you have to synchronise your data etc which is a pain in the ass.
