This is called "Still Life with Plums" and so when I set
up a still life, I'm not interested in just representing
what's there because...
for me that feels sort of like a homework assignment.
So I want to bring something else into it and I don't
want to feel like it's a labor to do what I want to be really
involved in the experience and so it's very interactive...
and very organic for me. It's also a very exciting process
because I never know where it's going to go or whether
it's going to be a good painting or a total failure and,
you know, failure is part of the process so...
so I make a lot of messy paintings and so here, the way
that I set up a still life, I'm starting to set this one up. It's
not finished, but I'm looking for things, notes of color and
I'm looking for
things to give it a little bit of depth. Things to change one
white into another white into another white so that it can
help spur me to push my color palette.
and texture palette so likewise with the beiges. I'm using
several different beiges. I'm using the sticks. All of those
are sort of marks for me. So some marks are smooth.
Some marks are very linear...
and there's such a variety of ways you can go about
making marks; squeegee, cardboard, just a big piece
of paper, big rag. I just feel like you should go about
it in a very aggressive, bold way...
because I'd rather having a painting that's bold with
mistakes than tentative and weak.
