When they first met in 2019, Yonas was imprisoned in an overcrowded detention center in Libya, where Jérôme was working for Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). More than two years later, the two reconnected in Belgium, where Yonas has claimed asylum after finally escaping Libya and crossing to Europe. “[I’m] divided—happiness [for] being here, and sadness that [I] left friends behind […] they are still there suffering. Especially at this moment, it’s very hard to cross through the Mediterranean Sea.” In recent years, there has been a significant rise in the number of refugees, migrants, and asylum-seekers intercepted at sea by the Libyan coastguard, funded by the European Union (E.U.). People are taken to overcrowded detention centers that do not have enough drinking water, food, latrines, or ventilation. “When they bring you back to the detention center, you know the consequences there. A lot of people have died there. I think this is inhumanity for the E.U.”
