‘The Lord of the Rings: Part 1: The Fellowship of the Ring’ – Fantasy Film Review - Friday Fantasy Show – Episode 207.

Oooo, ‘The Lord of the Rings’! It’s one of the ‘biggies’ of fantasy, if not the biggie. This is Part 1 ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ and is the 2001 live action version directed by Peter Jackson, adapted for screen by Peter Jackson, Philippa Boyens, Fran Walsh, music by Howard Shore, and starring Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, and Sean Astin.

Adapted from J. R. R. Tolkien’s epic fantasy classic. It’s an ambitious creative project. The books are huge, spanning three thick tomes. For those of you who aren’t familiar with ‘The Lord of the Rings’ (is that anyone?), the central character is Frodo Baggins who is charged with taking the One Ring to be destroyed in Mordor. Why? Well, this ring is all-powerful and has the ability to control and rule over the different races that live on Middle-Earth. If its power were welded by a corrupt and evil entity then life would be unbearable with suffering and famine, slavery and domination being the norm.

So with the help of a selected Fellowship: fellow Hobbits, Sam, Pippin, and Merry; Gandalf, the wise wizard; Aragorn, the ranger; Boromir, son of the Steward of Gondor; Legolas, an elf; and Gimli, a dwarf; Frodo sets off to fulfil his quest and his destiny. Simple? Not quite. Out to stop them are a host of nasty creatures. Ringwraiths, Orcs, and the unseen Dark Lord Sauron pursue and hound the Fellowship across the land. Can Frodo and his companions save Middle-Earth from a devastating fate?

My first encounter of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ was the 1978 animated film directed by Ralph Bakshi (reviewed in episode 43:    • ‘The Lord of the Rings - Animated’ - Fanta...  ) that was shown on telly a few years later. The film made a deep impression on my love of fantasy. I also have vague memories of seeing a stage show in London about 1986. The special effects weren’t up to much but the story and characters held it all together.

‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ had a budget of $93 million, so you’d expect everything to be perfect. Has Peter Jackson and friends make the perfect fantasy film?
