A massive fire swept through the Pravoberezhny market in St Petersburg on Wednesday, killing one person and injuring at least one more as explosions triggered panic among shoppers, Russian officials said. The Emergency Situations Ministry reported that the blaze covered about 1,500 square metres before nearly 100 firefighters brought it under control. Local media said the victim’s body was recovered from the debris while another man was hospitalised with leg fractures. Authorities opened a criminal case into alleged safety violations after reports indicated the market’s fire alarm system failed to activate, and investigators deployed a mobile laboratory to test air quality for hazardous substances.
