Dhanyashtakam Day 04/08 by Swami Aparajitananda, Chinmaya Mission Chicago-Yamunotri.

In the previous three stanzas, Pujya Swamiji explains that the entire Dhanyāṣṭakam revolves around the first line of the first stanza: तज्ज्ञानं प्रशमकरं यदिन्द्रियाणां. In the third stanza, we explored how the mind becomes bound by negativities and the means to liberate it. In this stanza, however, another cause for the mind's bondage is discussed:
त्यक्त्वा ममाहमिति बन्धकरे पदे द्वे
मानावमानसदृशाः समदर्शिनश्च।
कर्तारमन्यमवगम्य तदर्पितानि
कुर्वन्ति कर्मपरिपाकफलानि धन्याः ॥ ४॥
Do we often feel helpless, anxious, or worried? The root cause lies in ahaṅkāra ("I") and maṃkāra ("mine").

Pujya Swamiji beautifully elaborates how we mistakenly consider ahaṅkāra as the source of happiness, whereas, in reality, it binds us and immerses us in eternal sorrow. This ahaṅkāra —rooted in ignorance—creates illusions, giving rise to feelings of superiority and inferiority. However, these are mere figments of imagination, born of ego.
The scriptures provide clear guidance, identifying ego as the foundation of all illusions and the root cause of sorrow. While we all strive to cultivate samadarshana (equanimity), it is the ahaṅkāra that obstructs our progress.
How, then, do we overcome this ego? Pujya Swamiji explains that the key is to relinquish the sense of doership (kartritvabhava). He succinctly presents the principles of Karma Yoga, emphasizing how it helps us transcend this attachment.
Many people mistakenly believe that to rid themselves of problems, they must cease all action. However, Pujya Swamiji clarifies that Karma Yoga is not about abandoning action but about correcting the attitude and understanding behind it. Actions themselves are not the issue; the problem lies in the attachment and egoistic mindset driving those actions.
The ultimate purpose of all actions, Swamiji explains, should be the dissolution of ahaṅkāra and maṃkāra through the practice of Karma Yoga.
In the next verse, he will address another significant danger, which binds our mind.
