Measure noise the right way!

Noise is talked about all the time on digital oscilloscopes, whether it's the noise floor of the scope or measuring noise on an electrical system. It's easy to measure it the wrong way if you don't have some background.

It's also good to short the channel (I used a BNC short, you can see it if you look closely on channel 1). It's also worth noting that if you're measuring pk-pk noise, your waveform update rate is going to make it look worse unless you are counting the number captures instead of the length of time. A higher waveform update rate will also make your signal look fatter, because it's compiling so many traces together and displaying them at the same time.

The digital storage oscilloscope we used: https://keysight.com/find/4000x
I use this scope because the big screen is useful for teaching. For beginners, I recommend the InfiniiVision 2000 X-Series or 3000T!
All of them have the built in multimeter, function generator (WaveGen), and more!

Keysight's Daniel Bogdanoff teaches about how to measure oscilloscope noise in the tenth episode of The 2-Minute Guru.

The 2-Minute Guru is dedicated to teaching the basics of electrical engineering concepts and equipment.
