A small town to fall in love with: Colmar looks like a living postcard, like a fairy tale come true, like a scene from a Disney film. The third largest city in Alsace bewitches its visitors with an almost unreal beautiful backdrop and enchants with half-timbered houses, tarte flambée, fishing port - and even with a statue of liberty.
The town is well known for its christmas market, considered by many as being the most beautiful on the planet, alongside Strasbourg.

Colmar is the third largest city in Alsace ( European local authority of Alsace ) after Strasbourg and Mulhouse and capital of the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region .
As of January 1, 2020, Colmar had 68,294 inhabitants in the city and 120,367 in the metropolitan area.

Colmar is located on the Alsatian Wine Route and likes to call itself the capital of Alsatian wines and the city is famous for its well-preserved architectural heritage spanning six centuries and for its museums, including the Unterlinden Museum with the Isenheim Altar.

Colmar is the birthplace of famous artists such as Martin Schongauer , Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi , Ernst Stadler and Jean-Jacques Waltz-
The city was first documented in 823. In 1226 it was made an imperial city by Emperor Friedrich II .
In 1575 the Reformation was able to hold a partial entry. In the Treaty of Nijmegen in 1679, Colmar became part of France and has shared the history of Alsace ever since.

Colmar is located on the western edge of the Upper Rhine Plain, about halfway between Basel (60 km away) and Strasbourg (65 km away). In the south-east, the Lauch flows through the town in a right arc, which flows into the Ill not far to the east. Since the 18th century, the old town has also been irrigated by the Canal du Logelbach, which drains water from the Fecht to Colmar near Turckheim.

When in Colmar, dont forget to also visit Riquewihr, Kaysersberg and Eguisheim, which are incredibly gorgeous and historic.
