So I actually want to be a criminal lawyer in the future.
I wanted to do an apprenticeship so obviously I could get first-hand experience but then also a qualification, because obviously a lot of lawyers actually have the basic qualification of business admin skills. So I thought I’d get a qualification out of it but also get experience and the skills and expand my knowledge.
I chose an apprenticeship because I didn’t want to go to uni, I just wanted to get work experience and start in a work place straight away. So it’s a two year course where you go around all the different departments in HR so you have experience in every single bit from recruitment to someone leaving. And with that you go to college as well, so you have your qualification, you learn the knowledge side to bring into the workplace.
So my job role is actually front of house and facilities assistant. So I’m doing an apprenticeship, which means obviously I learn on the job as well. So I get a Business Admin Level 2 qualification.
Once I get my qualification then I hope to then find the department that interests me. I can go into that department and start building my career from there using the qualification that I’ve got and that knowledge to be able to move up.
I think with the apprenticeship I think it’s good because you’re working in a big business, you can see how you use your qualification and knowledge and how you use it in the workplace and you see how it all fits together.
I chose Slater and Gordon because I know it’s a successful business and I wanted to work in a large company. I think it’s accommodating for young people as well now so it’s good for like people like me who are starting out in their careers.
To anyone considering an apprenticeship I would say to go for it. A lot of people do have a bad view on apprenticeships because obviously they think the only way for you to get into law or certain jobs is by uni, but actually you can go by the apprenticeship route. So I would say to get an apprenticeship, ‘cause then also you’re learning but you’re getting experience and getting paid in all the same thing, so yeah.
