Streams are much more than the water we see running on the surface. They are complex, braided systems that run above and below the ground, heavily influencing the temperature, wildlife, and plants of the surrounding area. Habitats near streams and rivers are so unique that they are given their own name, “riparian habitats.”

At our May community meeting (5/5/22 at 6:30pm), Dr. Kristen Dyballa discussed the numerous benefits of riparian areas and how they are studied. From storing atmospheric carbon to supporting fish and bird populations, protecting and restoring riparian zones greatly benefits both humans and wildlife.

Dr. Kristen Dybala is an ecologist at Point Blue Conservation Science where she leads research to inform conservation strategies. Her research has focused on riparian and wetland ecosystems in California's Central Valley, examining bird population and community responses to habitat restoration, climate-change impacts, and trade-offs with carbon sequestration. She is currently developing a scientific protocol for quantifying the benefits of riparian restoration projects and a framework for projecting the benefits and trade-offs of land management decisions.
