Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) set up a separate company to manufacture scooters in India in 1999. This was the fourth venture after Hero Honda, Kinetic Honda and Honda SIEL.

Subsequent to the separation of Hero and Hoda, this company also entered the domestic motorcycle market. Today it is a significant player in this market, slightly behind Hero. HMSI claims to be the second largest motorcycle company in the Indian market, behind Her.

It does a turnover of Rs. 25,000 Crores from India (USD 3.06bn in FY23). Even in its global scheme of things, over 4 million bikes are made in India out of the little over 10 million bikes.
