The most famous encounter with the Chimera is associated with the hero Bellerophon, who was sent to defeat the creature as one of his many labors. Riding the winged horse Pegasus and armed with a spear or, in some versions, a lead-tipped lance provided by the goddess Athena, Bellerophon managed to defeat the Chimera by aiming for its fiery breath.

The myth of Bellerophon and the Chimera is often interpreted as a moral tale, illustrating the triumph of courage and skill over seemingly insurmountable challenges.
