Art, poetry, music, dance—in their purest form, these are the saying of something that cannot be said. They are the outward display of phenomenal human experience, something language alone cannot communicate. Words are never enough to say what I feel. Good poetry, stories, and song lyrics skirt around the edges of what it's like to be me or you. Their power lies in their ambiguity. "Show, don't tell" speaks to this idea—meaning is implicit, never explicit. To be explicit is to be material, fake, impermanent. To be implicit is to be ambiguous, to be real.

To be explicit is to be a materialist—to believe the fundamental basis of reality is stuff, and that consciousness somehow emerges from it. This is extreme anthropomorphism. My toys didn't come alive when I was five, and silicon chips won't do so now. We've known since Feynman that there is no stuff, no objective facts—only varying degrees of fluctuations in the field, of which human beings are an expression.
