Birth trauma happens when we go through a frightening, stressful or distressing event which is related to giving birth. It can develop into postnatal post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is a type of anxiety disorder. Witnessing traumatic events can also lead to symptoms of PTSD, so partners can experience it too.

Triggers to birth trauma/PTSD include:
A difficult labour with a long and painful delivery
An unplanned caesarean section
Emergency treatment for you or your baby
The loss of a baby
Other shocking, unexpected and traumatic experiences during birth

Following a traumatic birth, people can experience:
Vivid flashbacks (feeling that the trauma is happening right now)
Intrusive thoughts and images
Nightmares
Physical sensations such as pain, sweating, nausea or trembling

They might:
find it hard to concentrate
be panicky, jumpy or easily startled
be easily upset, angry, irritable or aggressive
be extremely alert (hyper vigilant/hypervigilance)
have symptoms of anxiety

They might feel:
like they can't trust anyone,
like nowhere is safe
like nobody understands
blame themselves or others
have overwhelming complicated feeling (anger, sadness, guilt or shame)

Treatment for postnatal PTSD:
If you're worried about the effects of birth trauma or postnatal PTSD, talk to your GP, midwife, health visitor or another health professional. Your doctor should discuss treatment options with you, so you can make a decision together about what's best for you. The main treatments are:

Talking therapy
CBT - Trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy
EMDR - Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing
Medication

About this film:
This film is a collaboration with the team at Lancashire and South Cumbria Health & Care Partnership Reproductive Trauma Service and produced by ForMed Films CIC, to raise awareness of the new Reproductive Trauma Service which helps new parents (mum and/or dad) recover from birth related trauma.

ForMed's director interviewed five women who have experienced moderate to severe trauma and PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) following a traumatic birth. Four of the stories were used to create a single, dialogical narrative for the film, which describes the shock experienced by when unexpected events turn pregnancy and childbirth into a traumatic experience.

ForMed Films are a BAFTA winning animation studio who collaborate with service users, healthcare professionals and charities to create memorable, meaningful, and engaging, animated films that improve wellbeing and increase public understanding of health-based issues.
