Saint Demetrius the New was born in the thirteenth century to a peasant family in the village of Basarabov, Bulgaria. After he joined a monastery, he received the blessing to dwell in a cave near the River Lom. Between 1769 and 1774, during the Russian-Turkish war, the saint’s body was taken from the village of Basarabov, brought to Romania and placed inside the Patriarchal Cathedral of Bucharest. Since then, the holy relics are venerated by the Romanians who have great devotion to Saint Demetrius the New. Starting with 1950, Saint Demetrius the New Basarabov was recognized as the patron saint of Bucharest, the Romania’s capital city.
Every year on October 27th, a three-day festival is held in the honor of Saint’s Demetrius the New Basarabov at the Patriarchal Cathedral in Bucharest, where crowds of the faithful come to venerate the Saint.
