Generators. The most important thing to consider when sizing a power generator is the high inrush currents associated with starting electric motors and transformers, which are typically six times the full load current. However, inrush currents for the type of high-efficiency motors being specified today can be almost double that amount.
Many power generators can now be equipped with solutions to overcome the extra excitation systems required in the alternator. In certain cases even more advanced options are available. For instance, some power generators feature a digital automatic voltage regulator (D-AVR) that is specifically designed to handle the high inrush currents associated with starting motors and transformers.
Another option could be to use a “Close Before Excitation” system that closes the breaker just when engine starts to run. This enables the excitation to increase gradually as the speed of the engine does, allowing for very soft start of loads connected to the generator. As a result, it is no longer necessary to buy larger power generators than needed just to cope with the initial electrical surge upon starting. What’s more, with smart control of the generator’s voltage, it is possible to achieve lower fuel consumption, reduced maintenance cost and longer lifetimes.
Dewatering pumps. The applications for dewatering pumps vary widely and newer types of pumps have been introduced in recent years. When users have to choose a surface pump, they usually opt for larger sizes on the basis that they can cover a multitude of jobs, but, in doing so, energy efficiency is often sacrificed. Developments in technology are helping to reduce fuel usage and operating costs.
Water pumps are now being developed to be smaller and lighter, as well as easier to move and transport both on and between work sites. Consequently, buyers should take time to ensure they select a pump that is suitable for use on multiple sites where the pumps might be working, and include built-in features that enhance movement and safety.
It is recommended to choose a pump that is suitable for multiple applications. In addition, pumps need to perform reliably in extreme environments. Therefore, it is important the selected pumps have been tested and is capable of withstanding tough and changeable working conditions as soon as it is turned on. Furthermore, as every second counts in terms of operational time, it is suggested to seek pumps that can be serviced in minutes, with easy access to all parts and consumables.
Light towers. LED or metal halide? The fact that LED lamps contain no filaments actually makes them more resistant to vibrations and impact than traditional metal halide lamps. It is impossible to simply fit an LED lamp into a standard light tower. The design of effective LED light towers involves paying attention to the lenses, and the optics they contain. These have a major influence on the quality and distribution of light, as well as reducing glare that can cause distraction and eye strain.
Furthermore, LED light towers are now being developed with fuel efficient power packs, which can deliver up to 2700 W. This ensures regulation of performance in any kind of temperature and altitude, and means the light tower’s engine can work more efficiently; reducing fuel consumption by an average of 60 per cent in certain applications.
