Silverback Awali and His Mischievous Mangabey Buddy At Zoo du Bassin d'Arcachon, France

Silverback Awali from the Zoo du Bassin d'Arcachon, France, patiently interacts with his female Mangabey companion.

Silverback Awali is sitting by the door. His little friend, the Mangabey Monkey called Litchee, jumped up and down and even jumped off the silverback's head. Awali is surprisingly calm. The Mangabey is trying to get to the big fellow's foot. She likes grooming the silverback. Eventually, the silverback has enough, waves his arm, and then gets up and charges through the room. The Mangabey and one of the blackbacks on the silverback's heels.

A little later, the Silverback is lying down again, with the Mangabey annoying him again. Even rubbing her bum on the silverback, Awali keeps his calm.

At feeding time, by this time, it got quite dark in there to film. So I apologise for the quality of the footage. The Mangabey really would like the silverback to share his food. Just look at the Mangabey's face, licking her lips, but Awali doesn't want to share. The silverback crosses his leg and then something that I find quite amazing...the silverback takes his big finger and gently tries touching the Mangabey.

The following footage is from the day after. It's feeding time and the Mangabey is jumping up and down in front of the silverback. As soon as the keeper moves, Awali moves into the corner where he knows the food is being thrown from above. It's snack time, they had their veg earlier, carrots, peppers... now some food pellets they really like. The Mangabey is still sticking to the silverback, running around her hoping for some leftover food. After his snack, Awali sits by the door. His Mangabey friend by his side. Later that day, the Mangabey is inspecting the silverback's foot. The silverback just lets her get on with it. Not sure what she was trying to do when the Mangabey tried to sit on the silverback's big toe. 😂🤣

Update March 2024.
After some investigation, I've now found out that both Mangabeys are indeed female! Some have already guessed this. Their names are Mandarin (Mum) and Litchee (Daughter), and they are mother and daughter. They come from Pairi Daiza in Belgium.
