Democrats and Trump administration officials left a Monday afternoon meeting touting progress toward an elusive fifth coronavirus bill, but said they still had issues to resolve. Negotiators House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and White House chief of staff Mark Meadows met for more than two hours at the Capitol. Following the meeting, Pelosi told reporters the discussions were “productive,” and she said “we are moving down the track,” but “still have our differences.” Pelosi insisted Monday that she wants to keep the additional insurance at $600 per week, at least until state unemployment rates start to fall. “As the unemployment goes down, the number can go down,” she told CNN earlier in the day. Addressing reporters alongside the speaker, Schumer added that “we’re making some progress on certain issues, moving closer together.” The senator said “there are a lot of issues that are still outstanding, but I think there is a desire to get something done as soon as we can. Asked Monday if negotiators made any progress on unemployment insurance, Schumer responded that Republicans are “sticking to their position,” according to reporters at the Capitol. 

Peter Kent Navarro, Director of Trade and Manufacturing Policy said this morning in an interview that “What's puzzling and troubling perhaps is the idea that Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats might be using workers as hostages to get to that big deal that they want.” He goes on to say that “President Donald Trump is a working-class president. “He’s deeply concerned about people who are on the unemployment lines, who face eviction.” He said what Trump would “love to see right now” is “some progress on enhanced employment benefits as well as eviction while the negotiations take place.” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday something similar to this and said, “We proposed a one week extension at $600 so that while we negotiate a longer-term solution at least all those people don't lose their money and I'm surprised that the Democrats won't agree to that. They are insistent on having this as part of a larger deal.”

Navarro said he didn’t want to “get in the middle of the negotiations,” but added that “in the short run, meaning in the next few days, let's pass an enhanced employment package to make sure American workers on the unemployment lines are kept whole.” He explained how “we're all for that and we're all for making sure that people don't get evicted from their apartments so let's get that done,” and he said how that it could potentially get done “today.” In the meantime then, let's have the longer negotiations about what this big package should look like.
