Because not using the built-in index pin also disables built-in safety systems, and accidentally turning the lathe on could be catastrophic, with flying bits of metal, wood and fingers. Coffee regulars know I bore a lot of radial holes for magnetically-closing boxes, and it's easy to drift in the middle of a long repetitive sequence, maybe reach automatically for the lathe on switch instead of the drill trigger. SO easy to do, saved by the lathe's built-in safety system, but not when bypassing the system to use a jig like this. Yikes! Learn something new on every coffee hour.
