The Home Office has rejected a freedom of information request into the costs of leather sofas and flat-screen TVs for asylum seeker flats in Farnborough on the grounds that revealing the details might affect their “mental health” and put their “health and safety at risk”.

The denial was appealed and the case went all the way to the top – to the Information Commissioner John Edwards, who ruled that it was correct to prioritise the mental health and health and safety of asylum seekers over the public’s right to know how the government is spending taxpayers’ money.

Talk’s Kevin O’Sullivan discusses the story with Isabel Oakeshott and public law barrister Francis Hoar.
