Gangotri Temple is a revered Hindu temple located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, India. It is dedicated to Goddess Ganga and is one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites in the state. The temple is situated at an altitude of about 3,100 meters (10,200 feet) in the Garhwal Himalayas, on the banks of the Bhagirathi River, which is considered the origin of the sacred Ganges River.

Opening & Closing: The temple opens on Akshaya Tritiya (April-May) and closes on Diwali (October-November) due to heavy snowfall in winter. During the winter months, the idol is moved to Mukhba village for worship.

Gangotri Glacier: The actual source of the Ganges, Gaumukh Glacier, is about 19 km from the temple and can be reached via a trekking route.

Rituals: Devotees take a holy dip in the Bhagirathi River before offering prayers at the temple, as it is believed to cleanse sins.

Best Time to Visit: May to June and September to October, when the weather is pleasant and the temple is accessible.
