This is Chapter 1 from Volume 1 of the Maida Book Series, a gentle and beautiful story written by Inez Haynes Irwin in 1909. The story revolves around a sweet little girl named Maida, who is sickly and lame, and her wealthy father's decision to buy her a little shop in Charlestown Massachusetts to help restore her health and give her purpose. The only condition he sets is that Maida must not reveal her true identity or her father's. As a result, Maida is able to make wonderful new friends for the first time in her life, as they think she is just an ordinary girl.
