The home affairs minister says the government's decision to extend the China travel ban is in the nation's best interest.

Peter Dutton said he respected Beijing's response to the crisis but argued the ban was required to best protect Australians.

“I think it’s a sensible response, and we are really pleased that people up on Christmas Island look like they are all going to be cleared and hopefully back home next week,” Mr Dutton said.

“We will do what’s in our country’s best interest.”
