Parihasapura - Kashmir’s Ancient Capital

Описание к видео Parihasapura - Kashmir’s Ancient Capital

Around half an hour’s drive northwest of Srinagar, you’ll find the remnants of a once great city, Kashmir’s ancient capital - Parihasapura.

Built by King Lalitaditya Muktapida of the Karkota Dynasty in the 8th century, the city was the grand vision of an empire builder, whose domain stretched from Central Asia to the plains of India.

A detailed account of the city in its heyday can be found in the Rajatarangini, a 12th century text written by the Kashmiri poet Kalhana.

He describes grand temples, stupas and intricately carved statues of Shiva and Vishnu in gold and silver - all credited to Lalitaditya, who amassed great wealth from his relentless military campaigns.

The last remains of this once great city can still be found today among the massive ruins strewn all over the site, harkening back to its glory days.
