This little octopus is a master of survival in one of Earth’s most extreme environments—the ocean’s twilight zone. The midwater octopus (Japetella diaphana) is one of the few octopuses that has adapted to life in open water, far from the safety of rocks and reefs. With a nearly transparent body and the ability to shift to a deep orange in the blink of an eye, Japetella uses camouflage to outsmart predators in the dark.

Drifting with the currents, the midwater octopus conserves energy with a slow metabolism. A mother midwater octopus carries her eggs in her arms, venturing deep into the midnight zone to keep them safe from hungry predators.

But Japetella faces new threats like climate change and pollution. MBARI’s cutting-edge technology is helping uncover the hidden lives of deep-sea animals like Japetella and learning how they may survive in a changing ocean.
