Grant Morrison’s run on Animal Man set the bar for creative writing for 90s comics. Released during an era where creators were redefining what comics were (Frank Miller on Daredevil, Neil Gaiman on Sandman), Morrison sprints to the too of the heap by reinventing Buddy Baker into an All-American family man, who isn’t that great at the whole superhero thing just yet.

Throughout 26 issues, Morrison deconstructs the DC mythos, and asks the reader challenging questions about their psyche, emotional response to fictional characters, and how invested one should be to protecting strangers, when family and pets are at stake. While there are moments that feel preachy (Morrison self-inserted his views on animal rights and consumption all throughout the series), it’s a story that can resonate with any reader, regardless of their morals and beliefs.
