AI probably won’t take over the world, but it might take over some of our workload. That’s already happening, from customer service chatbots to cashiers and even security guards. In a broad sense, AI is a field of study that includes other subfields, like computer science, data analytics, software engineering, and the list goes on. In short, AI wants to match or exceed human intelligence.

If AI is a field within computer science, machine learning could be called a subfield. Going deeper, we have deep learning, and under its wing, we meet generative AI models and LLMs, large language models.

Let’s peek into machine learning. Machine learning uses several learning methods, one inspired by the human brain, to analyze the input data. These artificial neural networks have layers of interconnected neurons that process and share information. Deep learning networks have many layers and can classify objects or find hidden patterns.

In human language, machine learning is a method that uses large amounts of input data to train a particular model so those models can make predictions based on completely unknown data. Machine learning operates on three learning models: supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning.

Supervised learning, for example, is trained to recognize cute puppies and is fed with loads of pictures labeled as adorable puppies. While unsupervised learning is based on unstructured or unlabeled data, the clear output is unknown. In this case, the algorithm learns from data by categorizing it based on attributes. This learning is good at recognizing and matching different patterns.

Reinforcement learning can be described as a journey of trial and error or “learning by doing.” It works on a feedback loop principle. When an agent completes a task, it receives positive reinforcement. When it doesn’t, it experiences negative feedback. A relatable example of this could be dog training. If a dog performs a task, it receives a treat.

AI is learning new tricks in many areas, and the results are amazing. Generative AI can create unique text, close-to-reality images, and other usable content. AI has become a helping hand in healthcare, especially in diagnostics or new drug development. Autonomous systems like robots and self-driving cars are becoming more sophisticated and independent.

AI pioneers Demis Hassabis and Fei-Fei Li praise AI as a tool that pushes knowledge boundaries. They both agree about the importance of responsible AI development, ensuring fairness, transparency, and ethical considerations are at the forefront of progress. On top of that, AI can revolutionize cybersecurity by helping security teams detect threats, predict attacks, automate responses, and even enhance network security. On the other hand, topics like job displacement, misuse of AI, and lack of transparency are on the table.

AI has a long road before it can match human intelligence, but not as a helpful companion or colleague. For everyday use, AI can handle repetitive tasks and make a decent dinner recipe according to one’s fridge content. AI can also offer the benefits of automation for healthcare and various fields of business. Today, AI has stepped up, enhanced customer experience, and strengthened cybersecurity.
