How to frame a hip roof with sweep eaves

Описание к видео How to frame a hip roof with sweep eaves

This is a short tutorial on how to frame a curved hip roof. This is a decorative detail, often built on bay projection, or a small awning. And every so often you see straight slopes that curve at the overhangs, better known as a “sweep eave”.

This assumes you already know how to build a hip roof, the basic rafters will all be cut as if you’re framing a regular hip. All the math, hip lengths, common rafter lengths, jack rafter lengths, cheek cuts, can all be determined using your preferred method as if you’re building a normal hip. One difference is that I join the two king commons with a single cheek cut, and then shorten the hip to wedge in between with a double cheek cut.

This is the resource I use for doing quick calculations on finding the radius of a segmented arc. That’s the formula you’ll use for a sweep eave, or at least that’s how it’s done in this video
