Maarten van Heemskerck was a Dutch painter, draughtsman and print designer of the late Renaissance.

He was born in Heemskerk in the Netherlands in 1498 and, against his father's wishes, studied art in Haarlem and Delft, eventually becoming an important Renaissance painter. His formative time in the workshop of Jan van Scorel had a decisive influence on his painting style. Some of the paintings attributed to Jan van Scorel have been identified as his works over the years.

Known for his travels and work in Rome, he and two unknown artists created the Roman Sketchbooks, which are an important source for art and historical research, especially for the history of the construction of Sankt Peter's Basilica. They served van Heemskerck as the basis for many of his works.

Back in Haarlem, he devoted himself to ecclesiastical commissions, not only for altarpieces and other paintings, but also for the design of tapestries and stained glass windows. He became a respected member of the Haarlem Guild of Sankt Luke and was married to Marie for two years, but she died in childbirth. No further personal details are known. He was also churchmaster in Haarlem until his death in 1574. He died at the age of around 76.

His style is characterized by a mixture of Renaissance ideals and Dutch tradition. He was known for his precise depiction of details and his ability to stage human figures in dramatic compositions.

Maarten van Heemskerck works often feature religious and mythological motifs, as well as landscapes and portraits. His paintings bear witness to a broad interest in history, culture and nature.

He is famous for his engravings, which show his intense preoccupation with humanist and antiquarian themes. He worked closely with respected publishers and humanists.

Van Heemskerck is also known for his various dramatic depictions of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

He left behind an impressive life's work of over 100 paintings, as well as numerous drawings and prints. His works were appreciated throughout Europe and influenced generations of artists.
