Township and royal VIP pay mutual respects

Britain's Queen Elizabeth, on a six-day state visit to South Africa, went to the massive township of Soweto, outside Johannesburg, on Thursday (23/3). She toured a British-aided self-help association for paraplegics in the township of some three million people. Earlier the Queen unveiled the first official memorial to the black South Afican servicemen who died while serving in the labour corps during the First World War. She unveiled the simple memorial of white sandstone, with the names of the dead carved on it, at a solemn ceremony in Soweto's Avalon cemetery where she met the families of the soldiers. The Queen
leaves for Durban on Friday for the next leg of her tour where she will attend a horse-race meeting and may meet Zulu King Goodwill
Zwelethini. She concludes her South African visit on Saturday.
