Growing a Garden by Bro. Bill Poulsen. It takes planning to grow a successful garden. It is important to understand that you will grow more vegetables than you will consume daily. You will need to decide how you are going to preserve your excess vegetables. That could include wet pack canning in bottles or freezing your vegetables for future use. In our area, the weather is warm enough towards the end of March to start planting a vegetable garden.
I personally have used the Mittleider Gardening System for the last two years. I have had a remarkably successful garden since I started using Dr. Mittleider’s system. The Book I use is: The Mittleider Gardening Course Step-by-Step Guidebook for the Home Gardener by Dr. Jacob R. Mittleider and James B Kennard. I have had two successful years of growing a garden using the Mittleider Gardening System. I have two grow boxes (4’ by 8’) that are about ten years old. My garden did not produce enough vegetables to eat or preserve for the summer. The last two summers I used the Mittleider system and have preserved enough corn and beets to eat the entire year. I attribute my success to three things: 1. Soil Preparation, 2. Fertilizer, 3. Watering System. The Mittleider System book supplies the information needed to be extraordinarily successful in growing a garden. The Mittleider is NOT the only system that works well to grow a successful garden. I have come to understand that practice in growing a garden is the fourth thing that necessary for success. It has been very satisfying to see corn stalks over ten feet tall by July in my garden these last two years!
