Gophers can be a huge problem in gardens, whether killing plants/crops/trees or causing erosion. And although they are generally solo animals, their population can get out of control very quickly in one season. In my experience, the best method for controlling gophers is with trapping. I NEVER use poisons as they can end up harming and even killing both pets and other protected wildlife such as birds of prey, coyotes, foxes etc.

The most-effective traps in my experience are the Victor Easy set traps. They are readily available at most hardware or agricultural stores, as well as online (check my link above).

I should note, these are kill-traps, so be aware, that if used effectively, you will have a dead gopher on your hands. The Victor Easy Set Trap is a simple and effective trap that is compact and can be easily set.

Step one is to locate the gopher tunnels. Gophers create a network of underground tunnels, so you'll need to find the active tunnel that the gopher is using. Look for freshly dug soil or holes in the ground.

Identify the direction of the tunnel, I do this by using a probe or a stick to create a small hole in the roof of the tunnel. If the hole is plugged up within a day or two, then you know the gopher is still using that tunnel.

Set the trap. The Victor Easy Set Trap is a scissor-type trap that can be set with one hand. To set the trap, press down on the back of the trap to open the jaws. Then, place the trap in the tunnel with the trigger end facing toward the direction of the gopher's travel. If you have a "through tunnel" that goes in two directions, setting two traps on each side will be very effective.

Check the trap daily. It's important to check the trap every day to see if you've caught a gopher. If two days go by and the trap has not triggered the hole is inactive and you should move the trap. If you do catch a gopher, dispose of it and reset the trap in a new location.

Remember to always follow the safety instructions and guidelines provided by the trap manufacturer when using any type of trap.
