The repeated accounts of shootings, brawls, and attempted suicides highlight a period marked by lawlessness and disregard for human life. The most prominent narrative centers on Carlos King, a recently appointed City Marshal, whose fatal shooting in a dance house underscores the dangers faced by those attempting to enforce order. Tom Carson, Assistant Marshal, left for Abilene shortly thereafter. Furthermore, the later revelation about King's widow fraudulently obtaining a pension by claiming he died in military service adds a layer of deception and corruption to the chaotic backdrop of early Newton.
