Australian police confirmed that two men who may have been plotting a public beheading were arrested during a raid in a Sydney suburb on Tuesday.A counter-terrorism raid was carried out in Fairfield, Sydney on Tuesday afternoon. Two men, identified as Omar Al-Kutoba and Mohammad Kiad by newspaper the Australian, have been arrested. An Islamic State flag, a machete and a hunter knife were found during the raid. Police officers also found a video in which a man threatened to launch an attack.Authorities said they did not know about the nature of the attack planned by the pair, but said they were “potentially going to harm somebody, maybe even kill somebody, and potentially using one of the items that we identified and recovered yesterday, potentially a knife”. Police also said the suspects were going to start the attack on Tuesday, prompting them to respond swiftly. The targets of the planned attack were not clear. Australia has been on high alert since a major terrorism incident last year. In December, two people were killed after a gunman took 18 people hostage at a cafe. The gunman shot and killed one hostage and both he and a second hostage died as police stormed the cafe in Sydney’s Martin Place.
