Japanese Kabuki music KIYOMOTO
Kiyomoto was composed in Edo as songs or music for Kabuki in 1814.
It is called “ Kabuki Johruri “, which are songs mainly explained the stories of Kabuki with Shamisen(Japanese traditional guitar)’s support.


「権九郎」Gonkuro



解説　introduction

It was composed by Saibei Kiyomoto and lyrics by Mokuami Kawatake on March, 1858.

There are 3 main characters in this story;
A prostitute named Shiratama,Gonkuro who is a dumb manager, and a bad lady-killer Ushiwakadenji.

Shiratama, working for Miura-ya at Shin Yoshiwara, a red-light district, was very beautiful.
Gonkuro got crush on her so he embezzled about $56000 and wanted to run away with her to his hometown.
However Shiratama has a bad boyfriend, Ushiwakadenji.
Actually, she and her boyfriend were planning to deceive Gonkuro and get the money.
Gonkuro is dreaming of his marriage life with Shiratama, not knowing about their plan at all.

歌詞　lyrics

((稲荷の森へ)歩み寄り）
Gonkuro and Shiratama were walking together to a shrine in the woods.

（権九郎「コレ白玉道々も言う通り　掟厳しい廓をば連れて退いた上からは　所詮江戸には居られぬぞや」）
“Hey Shiratama, we have been talking and reached here. We are not able to stay in Edo anymore as I have run away with you, who is not allowed to go out from the district.”

（白玉「江戸の内に居られぬとて　どこへ行くのでありんすよ」）
”But where are we going as we won’t be able to stay in Edo?”

（権九郎「ンサアどこと言うて当てはなけれど　生まれ故郷の上方へでも連れて行き　世間晴れて権九が女房　まず京なれば木屋町か　大坂ならば島の内　当分粋な　へへへ座敷を借り」）
“Ummm I have no idea but how about going back to the west, my hometown, and I want you to be my wife there. Like Kiyamachi in Kyoto, Shimanochi in Osaka. Let’s enjoy a rich life for a while there!”

（下女が一人に　子猫が一匹　他には邪魔も新世帯）
We have a brand new house with a maid and kitten.

（取り膳で食う楽しみは）
Such a great time we eat and talk over the table.

（一つ肴をむしり合い）
Sharing one dish together

（箸の先での錣引き）
our chopsticks are crossing over

（ひっくり返す皿小鉢）
I will turn the dish over since I was mesmerized by you

（これはしたりと飛び退いて）
Then I was panicking

(それ雑巾よ拾えよと)
” Hey please get a towel! Have to wipe it right now!”

（さんと呼びゃ　ハーイと来る）
The maid answers “ Yes, right now Sir!”

（ぶちと呼びゃ　ニャーンと来る）
When I call the kitten, it answers “ Meow”

（これを続けて呼ぶならば）
If I call them repeatedly

（おははいのハイと言や）
“Yes yes yes Sir”

（オニャニャのニャーンと鳴く）
”Meow meow meow”

（こんな騒ぎも痴話半分）
This happening is also one of my joy in our marriage life.

（嬉しかろうじゃないかいな）
I cannot wait for that now.

（権九郎「なんと白玉そうなったら　さぞそなたは嬉しかろうの」）
”You must be exited to have our marriage life as well, Shiratama!”

（白　玉「そりゃもうわちきが日頃の願い　嬉しゅうのうて何としましょう」）
”Of course! That is my wish and I am over the Moon!”

（権九郎「うふふ　あのまあ嬉しそうな顔わいな」）
”I am so happy to hearing that, ha ha!”

（鼻毛のばして差し覗く）
Gonkuro shows his long nose hair looks into Shiratama’s face.

（馬鹿げし顔を 流し目に）
Shiratama gives a cold look on his stupid face.

（白　玉「そう聞く上は少しも早う　追手のかからぬ内　わちきゃ上方へ行きとうござんすが　聞けば遠い所とやら　お前路用がござんすかえ」）
”I really love to go to the west as I have to run from the chaser as soon as possible. However it seems quite far and I’m wondering if you have enough money for traveling.”

（権九郎「おっとそこに如才があるものか　今日千葉様へ納めに行く　為替の金の五十両　ちゃんと着服しておいた　これを路用に通し駕篭　伊勢参宮から大和をば　廻った所がまさか二分にはなりゃしまい」）
”That is no problem! I have stolen $56000 from the shop. It is more than enough to go to Ise Jingu and drop by Nara.”

（白　玉「そんならそこに持って居やしゃんすかえ」）
”Do you have the money with you now?”

（権九郎「何で嘘をつくものか　疑わしくば　サッこれを見や」）
” Of course I do have. I will show you if you have any doubt.”

（白　玉「ンまぁこりゃほんにお金でござんすな」）
“Oh god, you have such a fortune!”

（権九郎「しかも小判で五十両　これさえあれば大丈夫」）
” See? No problem as we have them!”

（押し戴けば後ろより 財布めがけて一掴み）
There is a guy suddenly comes out from behind Gonkuro showing off the money to Shiratama.

（あわやと驚く権九郎 池の深みへ）
Gonkuro is fallen into a pond as he was so surprised.

（白　玉「伝次さん」）
”Oh my Denji!”

（伝　次「アッこれ」）
” Shhh!!!”

（むら鷗）
Seagulls are so surprised by the splash and flying out.

（白　玉「伝次さん　うまくいったねえ」）
” Well done Denji, we have got a large sum of money like that!”

（伝　次「そうよ」）
“Oh yeah.”
