The Langley School District and seven neighbouring districts from across the Fraser Valley came together with business, community and First Nations leaders, educators, students and parents, for a day of discussion about innovative student learning in the Fraser Valley. At the forum, we heard about a number of innovative programs across the region – including a Youth Academy with the local Fire Department in Maple Ridge, a mobile welding program that is starting up at Hope Secondary School in the Fall, and real-time student portfolios in Surrey to communicate learning in a different way to parents.

The Langley School District showcased Walnut Grove Secondary School in the morning, where students and teachers are engaged in a number of innovative and personalized learning initiatives. The Principal of the school said they try to encourage their teachers to find new ways to get kids excited about their learning by putting their learning in the hands of the kids, and said their entire school plan and goals are built around student engagement. Teacher Ryan Radford states that this is about giving students a choice in their education.
